Our Story

Two people. One vision. A movement for South Africa.

This is not just another business idea. It is a South African Integrity Movement — born from experience, inspired by concern for our country’s future, and driven by one simple belief: if we stand together, we can make a difference.

Where experience met passion, and an idea became a mission.

Every meaningful movement begins somewhere. Sometimes with frustration, sometimes with a dream, and sometimes with two people who see the same problem from different perspectives.

For Bennie and Delanie van der Merwe, it began with both.

Bennie — a lifetime of witnessing the consequences

After serving for many years in the South African Police Service, Bennie continued his career as a private forensic investigator and polygraph examiner. Throughout his career, he witnessed the devastating consequences of theft, fraud, dishonesty and serious workplace misconduct.

One troubling pattern continued to emerge.

An employee would become involved in serious misconduct. An investigation would follow, evidence would be gathered, disciplinary procedures would take place, and the employee might eventually be fairly dismissed.

But what happened next?

Often, that individual would simply move on to another employer, who knew nothing about the previous misconduct. And sometimes, the same behaviour would happen again. The same misconduct. A different employer. Another business suffering the consequences.

For years, Bennie watched businesses lose money, resources and trust. He saw how difficult it was for employers to identify dishonesty before the damage was done. One question continued to trouble him:

How long are we going to allow this cycle to continue?

Then came Delanie — a teacher with a different perspective

Later in life, Bennie married Delanie, a dedicated teacher who had spent many years educating, guiding and preparing young people for their futures. When Bennie needed someone trustworthy to work alongside him, he realised that the right person was already by his side. His wife.

Delanie joined him in the field of polygraph examinations, bringing the patience, understanding and values developed throughout her teaching career. For the first time, she experienced the corporate world from an entirely different perspective.

What she witnessed deeply concerned her. She saw how dishonesty could damage businesses, destroy trust and affect the livelihoods of innocent employees.

But her thoughts kept returning to the children she had spent so many years teaching. What kind of working world were these young people entering? Did they truly understand the importance of honesty, responsibility and integrity? Did they realise that the choices they made today could influence their opportunities tomorrow?

As Bennie and Delanie continued working together, their shared concern grew into a common belief. Something needed to change.

One morning, an idea was born

One morning, Bennie woke up with a thought. What if there was a database?

What if South African employers could contribute verified records of fair dismissals for serious misconduct to a secure, lawful and properly regulated national system? What if prospective employers could, with an applicant’s consent, check whether a qualifying dismissal record existed before making a hiring decision?

And what if the knowledge that serious misconduct could have future consequences encouraged people to think twice before acting dishonestly?

Suddenly, an idea began to take shape. Not simply a database to record past misconduct, but a system designed to help prevent future misconduct.

When Bennie shared his vision with Delanie, the teacher in her saw something even greater. Why stop at the workplace? Why not take the message of integrity into schools? Why not educate young people before they enter the working world? Why not visit businesses, motivate employees and inspire people to take pride in honesty, responsibility and ethical conduct?

That was the moment a database idea became something much greater.

The South African Workplace Integrity Movement was born.

Two people from different professional backgrounds, united by one purpose: to protect today’s workplaces while inspiring tomorrow’s workforce.

The problem we can no longer ignore

South African businesses face serious challenges from theft, fraud, dishonesty, violence and workplace misconduct. Businesses suffer financial losses. Honest employees are affected. Trust is broken.

And when employees are dismissed for serious misconduct, that information often remains with the previous employer, leaving the next employer unaware of what happened before.

But responsibility does not rest with employees alone.

Sometimes employers become aware of misconduct but hesitate to investigate or act because disciplinary procedures can be difficult, time-consuming or uncomfortable. We understand these challenges. However, meaningful change requires commitment from both sides.

Employees must take responsibility for their conduct, and employers must be willing to address misconduct fairly, consistently and courageously. Integrity cannot be built through accountability on one side alone.

That is why our movement calls on employers, employees and future generations to become part of the solution.

Our vision for South Africa

We believe that integrity should be more than a word displayed on a company wall. It should be a value we live by, a principle we teach our children and a standard we carry into every workplace.

Through the South African Workplace Integrity Database and our broader Integrity Movement, we want to bring businesses together, encourage accountability and inspire a new generation to understand that honesty is not a weakness — it is a strength.

We know that two people cannot change a country alone. But we also believe that every meaningful change begins with someone willing to take the first step.

We have taken ours. Now we invite South Africa to take the next step with us.

Two people. One vision. One South Africa built on integrity.
